Teacher Spotlight: Mrs. Christine King
Congratulations to Mrs. Christine King, a seventh-grade science teacher at Williams Middle School, who has been selected as this week’s Teacher Spotlight recipient!
Mrs. King grew up in a family of individuals which either served in the military or supported the military through civil service. As a child, she moved around a lot and often struggled to develop strong student strategies and study habits. When she decided to become the first person in her family to attend college, she did so without a scholarship and had to work a full-time job to make ends meet. She decided to become a teacher so that she could help others build effective learning strategies at a younger age, increase their chances at college scholarships, and make their academic path a little easier than the one she experienced.
“She’s a phenomenal teacher,” says Williams Middle Principal Melissa Lindsey, “she uses best practices in her classroom and she’s very supportive of the school and the school community.” She teaches a lot of note taking and study habits, but she also likes to integrate various subjects into her classroom so that students can see the real-world application of her science lessons. Mrs. King says that “having the opportunity to teach in a place where science is a focus has been a great joy, because students have a lot more accessibility to the opportunities that are available here in Huntsville.”She is constantly adapting to fit the needs of whomever she is teaching and says that “most students rely heavily on technology, so I try to integrate that into the classroom so that they’re seeing science in an innovative way.” One of her students, Jameh Fananapazir, says that he and his classmates “get a lot of cool projects from Mrs. King, some of the best that I’ve ever done.” Farrah Railey adds that “she gives us a lot of cool assignments, [like] excel analogy – I’ve never done anything like that before.”
When she isn’t teaching, Mrs. King enjoys spending time with her husband Shawn, and their two children who also attend Williams. They raise a large variety of pets and also enjoy spending time outdoors. While attending middle school in Germany, Mrs. King participated in Project Bold and hiked through the Austrian Alps for three weeks. This created a passion she now enjoys sharing with her family, and they seek out trails to hike anywhere they can go. She also looks forward to reading whenever she has time and has a particular fondness for fantasy and dystopia stories.
Mrs. King hopes students see that science can be integrated into other subject areas so that they acquire a more holistic view of the subject. She does her best to ensure that they aren’t just experts in science but grow as individuals as well. Principal Williams adds that she is “an advocate for the school, staff, students, and the community.” Mrs. King is a hard-working, positive, change-maker that is having a big impact on both her school and the district as a whole.
