Principal's Message 09-04-23

As we begin the month of September, it is a great time to encourage and support our children in developing their reading skills. Whether your child is a new reader or is able to read independently, parental engagement is an important part of literacy development. In fact, studies suggest that children who are read to/with at least three times a week are twice as likely to score in the top 25% of students their age on reading assessments.

Why Reading Matters

  1. Reading improves student concentration.
  2. Reading helps students develop language skills.
  3. Reading helps students do better in all subjects.
  4. Reading fosters curiosity about the world we live in.

How to Make Reading a Priority at Home

Reading at home will help your child develop critical reading skills and build their vocabulary.

Here's how to help:

  1. Have family reading time - 30 minutes when everyone in the home reads.
  2. Demonstrate that reading is a way to pursue personal interests. Regularly take your child to the library to get books on topics of interest to them.
  3. Give books for birthdays and other special occasions.
  4. Be a good role model. Let your child see you reading and talk about the interesting things you learn.
  5. Ask your child questions while you are reading as well as when you are finished. This will develop comprehension skills.
What do you think will happen next?
How do you think the character feels in that picture?
Why do you think the character did that?
What would you have changed about the event or about the book if you had been the author?

Research supports that increasing a student's exposure to print material is a powerful thing. In fact, adding at least 10 minutes of reading daily can increase a student's exposure to print and ultimately benefit the child's academic achievement level.

Daily Meals at Blossomwood

Don't forget all students at Blossomwood are welcome to a free breakfast and lunch from our cafeteria.

If your child would like breakfast, please remind them to come directly to the cafeteria upon arrival. We stop serving breakfast at 7:50 a.m. so they have time to eat in the cafeteria and get to class prior to 8:00 a.m.

If you have questions about your child’s lunch account, please email our cafeteria manager, Mirtha Petty.

Thank you again for helping us make each day a win for our students!
