Principal's Message 2-13-23

Dear Blossomwood Families,

The weather certainly has been anything but boring lately with unseasonably warm days accompanied by other days with a bitter cold wind and rain. If your child is missing a jacket, coat, sweatshirt, gloves, etc., please encourage them to check the lost and found just outside the school cafeteria. It is once again becoming rather full.

We look forward to seeing many of you all at this week's Valentine's parties on the afternoon of February 14. It will be a special time.

Great Turnout for PTA Family Game Night

Thank you to our PTA for providing such a wonderful opportunity for families to spend some time together last Tuesday night with Family Game Night! We had a great crowd, but most importantly the children seemed to have a lot of fun playing games with each other as well as with family members.

Special Thanks to Mathnasium for helping to sponsor the event, and thank to Nomad Catering. The hot dogs were delicious!

Blossomwood Student Competes in Madison County Spelling Bee

Our very own Blossomwood Elementary Spelling Bee Champion, Josiah Saevarsson, did a great job last week in the Huntsville-Madison County Spelling Bee! Josiah held in there for 6 rounds which started with 48 contestants. Josiah finished tied for 5th Place!  We are proud of you, Josiah!

Greenpower Team Excels

Under the leadership of Blossomwood teacher, Mrs. Chelsea Carter, our Greenpower Team had a great deal of fun and did a wonderful job of competing in the Huntsville City Schools Greenpower Team Goblin Races last Saturday, February 11!

For those of you that may not be familiar with the Greenpower Team, it is comprised of 4th through 6th graders that learn how to build and race a small battery powered car. Obviously, the students learn a great deal in areas such as physical science, mathematics, teamwork, problem solving, etc. Then, at least once a year, the team has the opportunity to compete against teams from not only across the Huntsville-Madison County area as well as teams from Birmingham, Florence, and Oxford to name a few.

Crewmembers include:

  • Nathan Carroll
  • Michael Davenport
  • Geordan Davis
  • Johnny Skinner
  • Lucas Stursma
  • Hudson Smith
  • James Tatum

Also, special thanks to Mr. Skinner! He has been and continues to be a wonderful resource and volunteer that is helping the students enjoy learning some basic science and engineering concepts.

Blossomwood Students Planning to Improve the Future of Huntsville

Last week, we had a special guest speaker, Dr. Noel Estopinal, who came to present to one of our GATE classes about the Monte Sano Greenway project

As part of Dr. Estopinal coming to talk to the class, he wanted to hear the students' research first.  He thought they had some really good ideas and was surprised at how closely their idea matched what the real project on Monte Sano has become!

Their idea is to have the city of Huntsville and the Land Trust of North Alabama work together to build a paved greenway on this side of town, that runs from the base of Bankhead Drive all the way up to the top of Monte Sano. This will allow cyclists to safely enjoy the challenge of cycling up Bankhead Drive instead of having to be on the road with cars (since there is currently no greenway and an existing sidewalk that only runs from the base of Bankhead up to Darlington Rd.) In addition, that sidewalk is only big enough for walkers - and bikes in a single file line.

Ms. Pauli recently learned that there has been a group of interested citizens already working on a similar project for two years. Their project is called the Monte Sano Greenway Project and Dr. Estopinal has been instrumental in organizing and leading the group. As a result, Ms. Pauli asked him to come to speak to the class, and I thought it was one more great example how we have such a wonderful community that supports and encourages our students!

Let's have another great week!

Sincerely,
Bradley A. Scott, Ed.D.
