Dear Blossomwood Families,

What a great week at Blossomwood! First, we had a fantastic kickoff event last Friday for our first-grade Pawsome Readers Program. The program encourages first graders to read, read, read over several weeks with the opportunity to earn a "link" for each book read which can be linked together to form chains that will span across the top of the first-grade hallway. Students can also earn prizes and a Pawsome Reader t-shirt! Second, thanks to Mrs. Murphree and the Blossomwood Chess Team for hosting the annual "Rookie Rally" last Saturday! What a great time!

Now and then, it is good for each of us to take a moment to examine how we spend our time. For example, how much time does your child spend daily watching TV, scrolling on cell phones, or playing video games? We all spend too much time doing one or the other. Here are a few suggestions for how to help our children make the most out of their time:

  1. Track how much time your child spends this week watching TV or playing video games.

  2. Establish a daily routine or time when he/she completes homework/assignments.

  3. Ask your child to help measure things when you cook as well as help with various projects around the house. This can help your child become a problem solver while also becoming more confident in his/her math skills.

  4. Ask your child open-ended questions instead of closed-ended questions. Requiring children to respond with a complete thought teaches them to think more in-depth, and it will often help you learn more about what is going on in their daily lives.

  5. Encourage your child to read before going to sleep. This practice can become a wonderful, relaxing habit they continue as an adult.

Thanks again for all that you do at home, and let's have a wonderful week of learning!
