First Grade Incorporates Science-Based Reading Strategies

Ms. Hill's first grade class is incorporating multi-sensory reading strategies during their reading block. Our reading specialist, Mrs. Ray, has modeled the routine of encoding a word using phoneme-grapheme mapping boxes. This strategy applies the knowledge of how the brain learns to read to incorporate hands-on activities during instruction. Students writing (encoding) words using the phoneme-grapheme mapping boxes helps them attend to the reality that number of sounds (phonemes) they hear in a word may be different from the number of letters (graphemes) that represent those sounds. The data has shown that these strategies are improving student reading and writing fluency!
