4th Grade Says Earth's Layers Are Egg-cellent!

Fourth graders in Mrs. Patrocky's class used hard boiled eggs to represent the different layers of the earth. Students observed how the crust (shell) cracked and moved just like tectonic plates and also compared and contrasted the thickness and shape of all the different layers. This inquiry-led activity prompted students to recall information from their lesson, using their newly learned terms (crust, mantle, inner core, outer core) to engage in discussion with their peers about their observations. Students really enjoyed the chance to work with hands on materials. In the end, they showed their learning by writing thoughtful reflections about the lesson.
