Weatherly Heights Elementary is proud to announce the outstanding achievements of two of our brilliant students at this year’s Scripps Spelling Bee. Maia, our 3rd-grade student wowed the audience by placing first, while our 5th-grade competitor, Zoey, earned a well-deserved second place. Their success is a testament to hard work, supportive teachers, and a community that values learning.

The Scripps Spelling Bee is part of a renowned tradition initiated by The E. W. Scripps Company. Scripps organizes national spelling competitions that challenge students to master complex vocabulary and develop strong language skills. By selecting words that range from common to challenging, Scripps encourages rising literacy levels and gives students a chance to shine academically. The competition is not only about spelling correctly—it’s about promoting a lifelong love for language and learning.

Integrating events like the Scripps Spelling Bee at the elementary level has a tremendous impact on young learners. Here are some reasons why:

  • Boosts Confidence: Competing in a friendly, academic environment helps students build self-esteem and public speaking skills.

  • Encourages Lifelong Learning:Students develop a deeper interest in vocabulary, language arts, and overall literacy.

  • Fosters Healthy Competition: The excitement of the competition motivates students to challenge themselves academically while learning the value of perseverance.

  • Community Building: School-wide events like this bring together students, teachers, and families to celebrate academic achievements.

Our 3rd-grade champion and 5th-grade runner-up have set an inspiring example for their peers. Their journeys—from practicing diligently at home to excelling in front of an enthusiastic audience—demonstrate that with support and hard work, every student can achieve greatness. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to both students and thank their teachers and families for helping them reach their potential.

Let’s continue to celebrate our students’ successes and encourage a passion for learning across Weatherly Heights Elementary!
