Students at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School enjoyed a special visit by Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, who stopped by on Tuesday to commend the school’s progress, encourage students, and discuss the importance of reading. She visited several classrooms, read to a group of third and fourth grade students in the school library, and spoke to the students about the importance of doing well in school.
“We’re focusing on encouraging our students to learn and work hard,” said Ivey, “we want students to be diligent about their studies and learn to read and read well.”
Huntsville City Schools Superintendent Dr. Clarence Sutton was also on hand and spoke about the impressive academic growth the school has seen over previous years, saying that “we expect the same growth with our October report cards.”
Governor Ivey worked as a school teacher in the 1960s and said it was good to be back, adding that “It’s always good to be in school on a school day!”
