Summer Learning Programs Provide Academic Engagement

This summer, Huntsville City Schools has provided a variety of summer learning opportunities for students.  Two of these have been operating in tandem: summer school and The Summer Learning Academy.

Summer school offers a variety of credit enhancement opportunities for high school students as well as fulfilling recovery needs for both middle and high schools.  The program has been in place for some time and has helped keep students on track with core subject standards while also providing a chance for students to earn credits in health, driver’s education, and career preparedness.

The Summer Learning Academy first began in 2021 to promote growth following the challenges of COVID-19.  This optional and free program now works by using summative assessment data and then providing appropriate enrichment opportunities to students based on that data.

“Our goal, overall, is to meet the students where they are,” says Summer Learning Administrator Felitta Johnson, “and to provide any help that they need to be successful.”

Both programs are completely standards based, with the academy focusing primarily on reading and math, and will wrap classes up this week.
