Congratulations to Alice Meko, a fourth-grade student at Hampton Cove Elementary School, who recently became Alabama's first ever national winner of the PTA Reflections Program theme competition. Meko chose I am Hopeful Because as her theme.
“I chose to do that,” she says, “because through these rough times, everybody needs a little bit of hope around here.”
According to the National PTA Website,
the Reflections program is part of a long-standing commitment of over fifty years to arts education. Each year, over 300,000 students in Pre-K through Grade 12 create original works of art in response to a student-selected theme. Students submit their completed works of art in one or all of the available arts categories, which include everything from Dance Choreography to Film Production and Visual Arts.
Paula Lyman, Alabama PTA Reflections Chair, announced the winner at a special ceremony at the school last week. “I’m so excited for Alice Meko,” she said. Lyman went on to add that she hopes the success of both Alice and other students would encourage others at the school and across the district.
In addition to Alice winning the national competition, four other Hampton Cove Elementary students received recognition as state finalists.
