Huntsville City Schools (HCS) is proud to announce the teachers of the year for the elementary and secondary levels. Doetiletia Sims, a sixth-grade math teacher at Highlands, was selected as the Elementary Teacher of the Year. Briana Butler, who is a math instructor at Hampton Cove Middle, is the district’s Secondary Teacher of the Year.
Sims has worked at Highlands Elementary since 2006. Since 2015, she has taught both regular and honors math courses. She graduated from the University of West Florida with a B.A. in elementary education and master’s in public health. Butler is marking her 14th year as a teacher. She earned both of her degrees from Western Governor’s University with a bachelors in elementary education and masters in ESL.
Both will also compete in the Alabama Teacher of the Year Program, which seeks annually to honor and recognize excellence in the teaching profession by identifying outstanding Alabama classroom teachers at local, district, and state levels.
Additionally, HCS is proud to recognize the Support Person of the Year for the elementary and secondary levels. Mireya Rivero, custodian at McDonnell Elementary, is the Support Person of the Year for the elementary level. Connie Amerson, administrative assistant at Challenger Middle, is the Support Person of the Year for the secondary level.
