Three HCS High Schools Featured as Top Schools in State

Each year, U.S. News & World Report compiles a list of the best high schools in the country and in each state. Three Huntsville City Schools were featured on the list of the top high schools for the state of Alabama: New Century Technology High School, Huntsville High School, and Grissom High School.

New Century Technology High School was featured as the second best school in the state of Alabama and also ranked at an impressive 213th nationally.  U.S. News gave NCTHS an overall score of 98.81 and noted the school’s 100% graduation rate.

Huntsville High School ranked at 18th in the state and was given the overall score of 91.09. Grissom High School placed at 28th in the state of Alabama and was given an overall score of 85.12.  

U.S. News’ rankings consider the following factors: college readiness (30%), reading and math proficiency (20%), reading and math performance (20%), underserved student performance (10%), college curriculum breadth (10%), and graduation rates (10%). 

U.S. News describes the highest-ranked schools as “those whose attendees demonstrated outstanding outcomes above expectations in math and reading state assessments, passed a diverse array of college-level exams, and graduated in high proportions.” 

These rankings are based on data from the 2018-19 school year.
