Huntsville City Schools alumnus Trey Flowers, defensive end for the Detroit Lions, is a nominee for the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year award.
The award is given annually to honor a player’s volunteer and charity work as well as excellence on the field.
Flowers, a 2011 graduate of Columbia High School, has been involved with numerous charitable causes. He developed the Flowers of the Future Foundation to assist and support youth programs. He also raised $15,000 for the Huntsville Inner City Learning Center and started a scholarship for students in Huntsville.
He will receive a $40,000 donation to the charity of his choice by being among the 32 nominees for the award. The player who wins the award will receive a $250,000 donation. Previous winners include Drew Brees, J.J. Watt, and Payton and Eli Manning. The winner will be announced the week of the Super Bowl.
Flowers is in his sixth season in the NFL and won multiple Super Bowls with the New England Patriots.
