Five Schools to Temporarily Transition to Remote Learning

Nov. 17, 2020 Update: Mae Jemison High School will join the four HCS schools in transitioning to remote learning for the remainder of the week.

Four Huntsville City Schools will temporarily transition to remote learning. Goldsmith Schiffman Elementary, Ridgecrest Elementary, Columbia High, and Huntsville High will engage in remote learning beginning Monday, Nov. 16 through Friday, Nov. 20.

Traditional students at those schools will return to campus on Monday, Nov. 30 with Monday, Nov. 23 and Tuesday, Nov. 24 already designated as e-learning days across the district. Thanksgiving holidays will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 25 through Friday, Nov. 27.

The district’s Preventative Measures Team worked collaboratively with each school’s leadership team to assess several factors before making the decision to transition to remote learning, including the number of positive COVID-19 cases, the number of students and staff members in quarantine, and substitute teacher availability.  The Preventative Measures team regularly makes individualized assessments on the needs of each school, and it will continue to monitor the status of all of the district’s schools.

The impacted schools will serve curbside meals for students during the remote learning period.

Instruction will occur as it did during the remote learning period at the beginning of the school year. Families who may have any questions are invited to contact their student’s teacher and principal.
