The Alabama State Council on the Arts named Huntsville City Schools (HCS) the recipient of the Visual Arts Achievement School System Award for 2020.
The council gives this award annually to the school district in Alabama that places the most student artwork in the Georgine Clarke Alabama Artists’ Gallery in Montgomery.
Art from eight HCS students is on display in the exhibit that features nearly 100 pieces from middle and high school students across the state. Of the eight from HCS, five students attend the Academy of Academics & Art, two students attend Lee High School and one student attends Grissom High School.
“As teachers, we strive to bring out the best in all of our students by providing a safe and encouraging environment to explore their wondrous ideas and passions,' said Mary Vande Voorde, art teacher at the Academy of Academics & Art.

While the annual reception in Montgomery will not be hosted due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the council will send certificates to the students and a plaque to the district. The council invites the public to view the online virtual exhibit.
