OpenGate Weapon Detectors in the HCS warehouse, ready to be deployed

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Huntsville City Schools (HCS) is taking another step forward in promoting the safety of students and staff by introducing advanced weapon detection systems at all elementary schools across the district. These systems, known as Opengate, will provide a seamless and efficient screening process as students enter school buildings each day.

To ensure a smooth transition, the HCS Security team will install the systems March 10-14 during Spring Break. HCS will go live with the new systems during the week of March 17 when students and teachers return.

This expansion marks the final phase of the district’s comprehensive safety initiative related to the rollout of weapon detection systems. HCS first implemented Evolv weapon detection systems at high schools in early 2023, followed by Opengate installations in all middle and junior high schools in Fall 2024. By extending this technology to elementary schools, HCS is ensuring that every campus is equipped with the latest safety measures.

“These security enhancements reflect our commitment to providing a safe learning environment for students and staff,” said Dr. Clarence Sutton, HCS Superintendent. “We are proud that all of our schools are now equipped with advanced weapon detection technology, reinforcing our dedication to campus safety."

These detection systems allow students to move quickly through entry points with minimal disruption to their school day. Similar systems are commonly used at major sports arenas and entertainment venues, providing an added layer of security while maintaining a welcoming environment. In addition to daily school entry, the systems may also be utilized at athletic events and extracurricular activities.

Staff members plan to work with students to ensure they are comfortable with the new process. While there may be brief adjustments as the new systems are implemented, providing a safe and supportive learning environment for students and staff members remains paramount.
